Dr. Brian Spitzberg
Board Member

Brian H. Spitzberg received his B.A. from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1978, and his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Southern California by 1981. He was a Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an Associate Professor at the University of North Texas, and is now a Full Professor in the School of Communication at S.D.S.U. Dr. Spitzberg has published extensively in the area of the theory and assessment of interpersonal skills and communication competence. His other areas of expertise include conflict management and philosophy of science.

To date, he has authored or coauthored over 45 scholarly articles and chapters, and has coauthored and / or co edited three scholarly books. The most recent is The Dark Side of Interpersonal Communication with Dr. William R. Cupach. Professor Spitzberg teaches graduate seminars in philosophy of science and interpersonal competence. At the undergraduate level, he teaches research methodologies, relational communication, conflict management, and communication theories. He also serves as the area graduate director for the Interaction Studies, International and Intercultural Studies and Applied Communication Studies specializations.
